Planning Multi-Room Video Systems

Planning Multi-Room Video Systems

Remember the days when you could install a Y-splitter on the output of your VCR and connect it to two televisions in different rooms? Video quality would drop through the floor (not that it was that great to begin with), but you could actually watch the same tape in two locations!  This seems nearly humorous in today’s world of streaming high definition video and automated homes that you can control with your smartphone, but big things have small beginnings.

Current multi-room video distribution utilizes HDMI distribution equipment and matrixes that can route various sources to different displays throughout an entire home. With such a system, you can centrally locate all of your video source equipment, then route signal to any or all displays in the home. With the touch of a button, you can send the output from your cable box to the television in the bedroom, or to every television in the house. Someone else can be watching a Bluray movie in the basement living room, while the satellite feed is being routed to all upstairs locations.

It all begins with defining where you want sources to be available, and how you want them to be controlled. Keypad controls, LCD controls and mobile applications are all options with most video distribution systems. Determine the total number of sources you intend to have and the total number of display devices that will populate the home. Then create a flowchart of what you want to have access to, and where. This may be any combination of sourcing and destinations, selectable by the end users from any location.

Enhanced Home Systems designs, sells and installs video distribution solutions ranging from the most basic to the most complex. Video distribution can integrate with audio distribution, creating a complete and customizable entertainment environment for many years of enjoyment.
