In-Wall Home Theater Speakers or Not?

In-Wall Home Theater Speakers or Not?

For those of you who intend to invest in a home theater system, there are many considerations to weigh before making your purchase. Will you employ a front projection system or a flat panel display? Will it be a dedicated space of its own, or part of your living room? What type of speakers will deliver your entertainment? The list goes on…

The brains of the system are typically not dissimilar from one another, aesthetically speaking. These command and control components, commonly consisting of an AV Receiver or a combination of preamplifier and power amplifier(s), get tucked into the most convenient space or rack to act as the ‘engine’ for the entire system. The TV or Projector presents your content in spectacular, high definition detail. And finally, the speakers complete the experience by immersing you in the action, tying together every element of the cinematic adventure into one amazing performance.

Selecting from many hundreds of home theater speaker styles and types may very well be the most difficult part of the process, so Enhanced Home Systems recommends narrowing the choices down to a more manageable palette. Let’s first divide the playing field in two – architectural, or in-wall/ceiling loudspeakers, and enclosure-based speakers, which can range from small cubes to medium-sized bookshelf speakers to grand, floor-standing monoliths.

If you want your theater to sound awesome (and who doesn’t?), room acoustics are a primary consideration. Sound behaves very differently in different spaces. Our expert teams can assess the acoustic properties of the desired space, and this information can then be further utilized, in combination with other noteworthy variables, in the selection process.

Loudspeaker placement is critical to a great sounding theater system. We find that “ideal” placement often gives way to “preferred” placement based on aesthetics and other considerations. Would the user rather have speakers that are virtually invisible and still sound awesome, or the type that make a visual impact in addition to their great sound? At times this may come down to the space into which the theater is to be installed. A dedicated room may be more conducive to larger speakers being placed exactly where they should be, whereas a living room may dictate less overt speakers as not to detract from the aesthetics of the environment.

The choice between architectural and enclosure-based speakers depends mostly upon a combination of preferences and expectations. Enhanced Home Systems has installed some amazing theater solutions using in-wall, in-ceiling, free-standing and combinations of speakers to achieve what the client envisioned their system to be.
